Cozy games that don't punish you for logging off
I hit a wall a while back with games that treated my attention like rent. Miss a day and your crops die, your streak resets, your building gets attacked. It's exhausting.
So I've been leaning into games that let go. Garden of Small Hours is the clearest example: plants grow on real time, but nothing wilts if you forget. You come back when you feel like it and the garden is exactly where you left it.
This design respects that you have a life. The reward loop is still there, it just doesn't rely on guilt. Tide and Timber does something similar with clean offline saves, so a long break never costs you progress.
If you're burned out on notification-driven games, seek out ones with no penalty for absence. They're out there, and they're a lot healthier to keep on your phone.
