Why mobile RPGs are finally telling stories worth reading
For years mobile RPGs treated story as a loading screen between fights. Tap through some text, get to the loot. That's changed a lot recently, and playing Ashen Covenant reminded me how far things have come.
Good branching writing is hard because it means building content players might never see. When a game commits to it, though, the payoff is huge. Losing a companion because of an offhand dialogue choice made three chapters earlier hit me harder than any boss fight.
The trick as a player is to slow down. These games reward reading, remembering names, and actually thinking about who you're talking to. If you speed-tap through dialogue, you'll miss the whole point and then wonder why the ending felt hollow.
My advice: pick one story-heavy RPG and let it breathe. Don't multitask through it. The best moments in these games come from being present enough to feel a decision land.
