Can real strategy games work on a touchscreen? Mostly, yes

Strategy has always felt like a desk genre, all precise clicks and dense menus. Playing Tide and Timber made me rethink how much of that actually needs a mouse.

The games that adapt best simplify inputs without dumbing down decisions. You still plan trade routes and weigh risks; you just do it with taps and drags instead of pixel-hunting. That's a real design skill, and it's easy to get wrong.

Where phones struggle is information density. A good strategy game shows you a lot at once, and a small screen can't. The clever ones use tide cycles, seasons, or clear icons to make the key info pop instead of burying it.

My takeaway after a lot of hours: strategy on mobile works when the game is designed for the screen from the start, not ported. Look for that, and you'll find genuinely satisfying planning even without a mouse.
